The Minnesota Power Foundation focuses its giving in the following areas:

  • Education
  • Environment
  • Community Services
  • Youth Development
  • Arts and Culture
  • Health and Human Services

In general, all awards are considered one-time grants. Highest priority is given to nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations within our service territory that submit well-defined requests for projects or programs that meet the following criteria:

  • Improve a community's quality of life
  • Have a broad base of support
  • Take an innovative and cost-effective approach
  • Do not duplicate other efforts already in existence
  • Increase public awareness

Application Process

Grant Applications are accepted and reviewed throughout the year.  To apply for funding, please submit the following information:

Organization:  provide the organization’s name and address, plus contact person’s name, title and telephone number.  Also include the organization’s web site and contact’s e-mail address (if applicable).

Organization History:  Please include a mission statement.  List any financial or other type of Minnesota Power involvement with your organization.

Request: Please describe your project, program or use for which you are seeking funds.  If your request includes a range of donation or sponsorship levels briefly describe how each level would assist your organization.  List the benefits to Minnesota Power associated with each level.

Amount being requested from Minnesota Power Foundation:  $

Project Budget:  In order to help us fully evaluate your request, it is important to know the total amount you need from all sources.  Please include a detailed budget.  List other funding partners involved with your project and identify where they are confirmed or tentative and what their respective financial commitments are to this specific project. 

Minnesota Power/ALLETE employee involvement:  are any Minnesota Power or ALLETE employees currently volunteering with your organization or serving on your board of directors?  If so, please list.

Timeframe:  Please identify period of time grant money will be used.

United Way Participation:  provide amount received

Program Evaluation:  detail how this program or project will be financed in the future and the methods that will be used to evaluate its effectiveness.

Recognition: How would Minnesota Power Foundation be recognized for making a donation?

Please include the following attachments:

  • Copy of IRS tax exemption letter
  • List of board of directors or committee members
  • Project budget

Due to the number of requests we receive, please allow up to 90 days for evaluation and response.

Notification

  • All organizations requesting funds will be notified whether or not they have been selected to receive funds within 90 days of review.
  • Applicants being granted funds from Minnesota Power Foundation will be required to return a signed Tax Receipt Form and a Grant Agreement Form.
  • Organizations will also be required to provide a final report on the grant at the end of their fiscal year or at the end of the funded program/project.
