Minnesota Power's Foundation is another shining example of the commitment to brighten communities. It reinforces a long tradition of corporate philanthropy and formalizes a commitment to future giving. The Foundation’s program reflects a commitment to build stronger communities, support education, promote arts and culture and preserve our natural resources.  We are dedicated to supporting charitable organizations that help improve the quality of life in the communities where Minnesota Power has a presence.  Presently, the Foundation donates about $1 million annual to service area nonprofit programs and services.

Minnesota Power FoundationThe foundation, which is operated as a separate legal entity, is governed by a board of directors.  The board sets Foundation budgets, policies and procedures and approves grants.  To gain input and ideas from Minnesota Power employees at every level and in all geographic locations, the foundation has established numerous advisory committees called Regional Advisory Committees.  These committees include local Minnesota Power employees.  They make recommendations to the Foundation board regarding local grants that fit the Foundation’s strategies and local needs.

The Regional Advisory Committees meet on an on going basis to review grant requests under $5,000.  Grants over $5,000 are reviewed by the Foundation Board of Directors during meetings scheduled for February, May, August and November.

In observance of its 100th anniversary as an electric utility, Minnesota Power, a division of Duluth-based ALLETE, Inc. (NYSE:ALE) formed the charitable organization, the Minnesota Power Foundation.
